HOW DOES CLASSROOM DESIGN AFFECT STUDENTS LEARNING? Andrea Crawford Education 518
ABSTRACT In general, literature seems to indicate that classroom design reflects the classroom management. It greatly affects students learning, either negatively or positively. Teachers should research information once they learn more about their students to help them decide on what will work best in their classrooms, what will enhance their students learning. Studies also indicate that even smaller things that a teacher would never consider are important too. For instance, the temperature in the classroom, the open space, where items are placed, and the size of desks all affect students learning. Keywords : classroom design, classroom management, organization, behaviors, student learning, effects, study, students, teachers
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The purpose of the study is to determine how classroom design affects students learning. Everything from the colors in the room, the temperature, the furniture, and the environment the teacher sets affects students learning.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS Does the classroom reflect a positive learning environment? Does the classroom design represent the curriculum or theoretical perspective of the centers? How does the children in their class perceive the designed classroom and what type of design characteristics do children in the environment prefer, and why?
HYPOTHESIS If teachers consider the classroom design of their classroom and design it in a way to reach all learners, students will be more proficient within their classrooms and learning.
REVIEW AND SUMMARY OF THE LITERATURE Classroom design is the structure into the way a teacher organizes their classroom. It has to deal with the furniture in the room, such as the desks, chairs, tables, posters, rugs, etc. Classroom management is how a teacher structures their classroom and it all starts at the beginning of the school year. The class rules, positive behavior promotions, behavior charts, and behavior plans all have to deal with the classroom management of a classroom. Organization is the placement of items in a classroom and being structured in a way that your classroom runs smoothly. Behaviors are the way the students act within the classroom, or perform. Student learning is the knowledge and what the students gain from within the class. Then study, students, affect, and teachers all relate to things involved within the classroom.
REVIEW AND SUMMARY OF THE LITERATURE The studies also showed how classroom design has a lot to do with the teachers approach and the relationship that is formed between the teacher and the student. There are
