(Look at slide for picture) Regarding hard and soft magnets. Not everything stored now is based on magnetic, also based on optics and transistors. A non magnetic material, (magnetization-the magnetic moment divided by the volume) magnetization at zero field is zero. There is a nonlinear relationship (the magnetic permeability)—M/H (magnetization over applied magnetic field). There is a point, no matter how much you increase the field, there is a point where magnetization does not increase anymore—saturation. Requirements for head: Head: easily magnetized and demagnetized High permeability (slope of M vs. H) Loose very little energy as heat Tape High remanent magnetization-produces sufficient field above the disc Because want the largest possible current High coercive field-info is not erased
