What Is Diabetes? Diabetes is a lifelong condition that keeps your body from turning food into energy Understanding Diabetes 1. Glucose = main source of energy; main type of sugar in blood 2. Glucose comes from the food you eat 3. Insulin = the hormone that gets glucose into the cells of the body The pancreas makes insulin Insulin acts like a key that unlocks the door to each cell When a cell is unlocked, glucose can get in to provide energy High blood glucose more insulin Food is broken down in the body Glucose is released from the food Glucose travels throughout the body causing glucose level in the blood to go up

What Happens In Type 1 Diabetes? Your pancreas stops making insulin - There is no insulin to unlock the cell doors - Glucose gets locked out of the cells & builds up in the blood - If glucose can’t get into the cells, the cells don’t get the energy they need - Acids called ketones form for energy
