Purpose: In this experiment, redox and oxidation reactions will take place. The student will understand the components of a redox reaction and find oxidation strength. This experiment will clarify how redox reactions work within a chemical reaction. Oxidation and reduction reactions take place because of how electrons flow throughout a system of chemical equations. In order to thoroughly understand redox reactions, a redox reaction is generally broken into two parts: oxidation and reduction. An oxidation reaction involves the oxidation number of an element to increase from left to right; the oxidation number will increase as electrons are lost. Meanwhile, reduction occurs when the oxidation number of an atom decreases. Therefore, the reduction reaction is the part of the reaction where electrons are gained. Oxidation numbers, by definition, are the charges an atom would have if the atom was composed of solely ions. Even though oxidation and reduction are two different parts of the reaction, these two parts act simultaneously. In a reaction, a student must be able to determine which atom is the oxidizing or reducing agent. An acronym to remember which agent goes to which reaction can be recalled as “LEO says GER”. In this acronym, LEO stands for losing electrons means that it is the oxidation half reaction. If an atom is present in the oxidation reaction, it is considered the reducing agent as its charge is increasing. In this acronym, GER stands for gaining electrons means reduction reaction.
