Physics 2213 Homework #5 Fall 2008 Read: Chapter 21.1-4. For practice: Chap. 21: Q's #21.1-5, 21.9, 21.11-17, 20-23. E's & P's #21.7, 11, 21, 27, 32, 44, 47. To be prepared for your 2nd discussion section the week of September 29 - October 3: #21.8 [Aluminum Spheres] #21.49 [Electric Field in 2-D] #21.23 [Square of Charges] Please add: (c) What magnitude and sign of charge Q can you place at the center of the square so that the net force on each charge is zero? Express your answer in terms of q (the charge at each corner). Does the answer depend on L? #21.43 [Positive Pair] Please add: (c) Also, derive an expression for the electric field at points on the y-axis as a function of y. In which direction does this electric field point? Use your result to graph this electric field vs. y for values of y between -4a and +4a. (d) How does the electric field for points on the x-axis and y-axis depend on x or y when x or y gets very large? How does this behavior differ from an electric dipole at large distances?
