Chapter 3: Chemical Compounds 3.1. Types of Chemical Compounds and Their Formulas a) Covalent Bond : Sharing of electrons between atoms give rise to molecular compounds. b) Ionic Bonds : Transfer of electrons from one atom to another gives rise to ionic compounds. c) MOLECULAR COMPOUND 1) Molecular Compound : Made up of molecules which consist of a small number of non-metal atoms held together by covalent bonds. 2) Chemical Formulas : Symbolic representations of molecular compounds. 3) Empirical Formula : Simplest formula for a compound. Shows types of atoms and relative numbers. 4) Molecular Formula : Based on an actual molecule of a compound. 5) Structural formula : Shows the order in which atoms are bonded together in a molecule and by what types of bonds. 6) A double dash is called a double covalent bond 7) Condensed Structural Formula : Written on a single line. (example CH 3 COOH) 8) Organic Compounds : Made up of carbon and hydrogen, as well as oxygen and/or nitrogen. 9) Carbon atoms form four covalent bonds. 10)Line Angle Formula : Line represents chemical bonds. Carbon atoms exist where a line ends or meets another line.

11)Ball and Stick Model : atoms are represented by small balls, and the bonds between atoms by sticks. 12)Space Filling Model : show that the atoms in a molecule occupy space and that they are actually in contact with one another. d) IONIC COMPOUNDS 1) Ionic Compound : Made up of positive and negative ions joined together by electrostatic forces of attraction. 2) Atoms of metallic elements tend to lost electrons while nonmetals tend to gain electrons. 3) Cation : Positive ion 4) Anion: Negative ion. 5) Formula Unit : smallest electrically neutral collection of ions. Doesn’t exist as a distinct entity, instead is in a vast crystal. 6) Monatomic
