Once the purpose of the study is identified, the system variable which represents the state of the system could be determined. Then the system may be further classified by the way in which its state changes over time. If the state of the system changes continuously over time, the system is treated as a continuous system. If the system state changes discretely over time, the system is classified as a discrete system. b) Population study in a city Assume the purpose of the population study is to investigate how the population in a city changes over years. Technically, the system should be model as a discrete system since the number of people in a city changes in a discontinuous manner over time.
