Organic Recitation #1 August 17, 2008 Chemistry 357 - Qatar Organic Chemistry for the Life Sciences Recitation Exercises - ANSWERS 1. ( 10 Marks ) A) Shown below are three sets of resonance structures . For each structure, i) provide the formal charge for ALL charged atoms and then ii) determine the net charge for each structure. NOTE: All valence electrons are shown in the form of covalent bonds or lone pairs. O C C H O H 3 C H O C C H O H 3 C H Net charge: ________ Net charge: ________ C C C C C C N O O H H H H H C C C C C C N O O H H H H H Net charge: ________ Net charge: ________ O N CH 3 N O CH 3 Net charge: ________ Net charge: ________ -1 -1 -1 -1 0 0 B) ( 2 Marks ) What do you notice about the net charge of resonance structures? Resonance structures MUST have the same net charges. RECALL… Resonance structures are simply alternate representations of the same molecule or ion. To go from one resonance structure to another, lone-pair or π -electrons are moved BUT NOT ATOMS. A helpful analogy for resonance structures is “you take a frontal picture of a friend, then you take a picture of their side profile”. Although the pictures are different, your friend hasn t changed.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
