Please turn in this sheet stapled to the top of your work. Physics Problems: 1. A 1200 kg car travels in a straight line on a level road. The car is moving at 30 m/s when the driver slams on the brakes. The wheels lock and the car stops in 40 m (a typical stopping distance for modern cars.) (a) Draw a carefully-labeled FBD for the car. (b) What is the coefficient of kinetic friction between the wheels and the road? (c) Given the same coefficient of kinetic friction as in part (b), what is the stopping distance if the car's mass is doubled? (Is your answer surprising? reasonable?) (d) What will the stopping distances of the original car be if the road is covered with (i) rain so that μ k =0.25 and (ii) ice so that μ k =0.1? Would it help to have a heavier car in this case? Now the car is on a road that drops 120 m for a horizontal distance of 1000 m (comparable to the 12% grade of Buffalo St. between Collegetown and downtown.)
