PRELIMINARY COURSE ASSESSMENT TASK 3 – REFUGEES The United Nations definition of a refugee as stated in the United Nations Convention and Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees (1968) is Any person who is outside their country of origin and who can prove that they have a well founded fear of persecution because of their religion, nationality, ethnicity, membership of a particular social group or political opinion if they return to their country of origin. On average, approximately 12,000 refugees are granted protection visas every year. Refugees constitute a large portion of the migrant population in Australia Many refugees experience discrimination, cultural and linguistic barriers and economical problems when arriving in Australia. For these reasons refugees are regarded under the law as a disadvantaged social minority. This status as a disadvantaged group has required the Federal and State Legal Systems of Australia to make special provisions to protect and aid refugees in Australia. Some examples of measures the Australian legal system has taken to protect refugees include; passing of certain protective legislation specific to refugees; establishing numerous organisations through which refugees can request aid and services and providing linguistic and cultural education services to aid a smooth transition into Australian society. Protective legislation Refugees, like all Australians, are protected from racial, religious or political discrimination under a number of acts, such as the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth),
