Through an integration of listening, speaking, reading and writing, this course aims to provide a solid foundation in beginning level Korean. Particular emphases will be placed on the ability to use Korean in real-life-like situations/tasks with culturally appropriate and acceptable manners. Students are expected to actively participate in communicative exchanges with the instructor and classmates as well as be well prepared for the content of each class. This course assumes that students do not have any prior knowledge of Korean. Expected Learning Outcomes: 1. Understand the basic phonetic system of Korean and pronounce Korean sounds accurately. 2. Read and write the letters of the Korean alphabet, Hangul. 3. Perform basic communicative functions such as greetings, self-introduction, showing appreciation, apologies, asking for direction, talking about past or future events and describing places. 4. Read and write simple texts such as describing daily life, self-introduction, and weekend activities. 5. Become familiar with culturally appropriate manners/behaviors involved in the language use.
