Running head: A CAREER IN PSYCHOLOGY 2 Abstract This assignment of a white paper will assess the benefits of pursuing a Master’s degree in psychology. This paper will highlight the competencies that are required along with the skills that it takes to become a professional in psychology. This paper will discuss a method that will analyze any existing gaps in knowledge and skills that are based on the requirements that are crucial in becoming a successful professional in psychology. Furthermore, this paper will include what it takes to be a proficient psychology professional by discussing a realistic plan that will fill in the identified knowledge and skills that will assist in achieving professional goals.

Running head: A CAREER IN PSYCHOLOGY 3 A Career in Psychology The definition of psychology is the study of humans and animals. This study is a science that deals with a relationship between behavior and a surrounding environment along with the between behavior and the functions of the brain. There is a constant altering of needs and people’s interests due to the increase of diversity in companies along with the growing number of families that have two people working, which has encouraged psychologists to develop new approaches and techniques to address the changes in human behaviors (American Psychological Association, 2016a). Therefore, the ever-changing education and the advanced learning is necessary in the field of psychology. Benefits of a Master’s Degree in Psychology A master’s degree in psychology provides many advantages. First, having a master’s degree along with a background in mathematics or natural science, is valuable to a person that is interested in a doctoral program in psychology. There is data that suggests that an individual that enters a doctoral program and has a master’s degree, will more likely complete the program verses an individual that does not. Secondly, the opportunities for an individual with an advanced degree are continuing to rise. Although, the undergraduate degree does offer a foundation for psychological work or other works in that field. Such as, technology, business, medical science and there are many organizations that prefer someone to have the knowledge along with skills that the psychology degree has to offer. In addition to, there is a growing demand for individuals that have a psychology degree (American Psychology Association, 2016a). Thirdly, the individuals that have specialized in specific fields such as, industrial-organizational psychology and/or forensic, potentially earn a higher salary in the ball park of six figures (Steele, 2016).
