Assignment 11: Coastal Hazards 1. How do tectonics influence coastlines? Overall, coastal topography is greatly influenced by plate tectonics. The east coasts of the United States and Canada, as well as the Canadian Artic coast are described as tectonically passive because they are not close to a convergent plate boundary. Tectonically passive coasts typically have wide continental shelves with barrier islands and sandy beaches. 2. What are the three factors used to determine the size of waves? Wind Speed, Wind Direction, and Fetch (the distance wind blows over a body of water). 3. Define wave height, wavelength, wave periods, wave energy, and wave motion? Wave Height – Difference in height between the trough and crest of a wave. Wavelength – Distance between successive wave crests. Wave Periods – Time in seconds for successive waves to pass a reference point. Wave Energy – Proportional to the square of wave height. Wave Motion – Deviations from a state of rest or equilibrium.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
