Lauren Fernandez Period 6 November 1, 2015 Symbolism is used in many stories to convey a deeper meaning within simple ideas. For example, a doll may be put in a story to represent childhood and innocence. A butterfly could represent the curiosity of a person in another story. In Ethan Frome, Edith Wharton presents a red pickle dish to the reader on the night Mattie and Ethan are alone together. However, the way Wharton presents the pickle dish makes it seem as if the dish has a significant meaning in the story. In Ethan Frome, the red pickle dish symbolizes the passion from Ethan and Zeena’s marriage, which is broken on the night Mattie and Ethan spent together. In the novel, the color red showed up numerous times, always symbolizing passion. Other than the dish, the color red was always associated with Mattie and the things that Ethan loved about her, or beautiful things that reminded him of Mattie. Socially, red symbolizes
