Payton Remiger Hour 3 CITS History Historiography is the way historical events are perceived. Many historians have conflicting views on how historical events occurred. One of these events is the Progressive Era. The Progressive Era is known as a time of potential reform and new beginnings. Many historians have voiced their opinions of how they perceive The Progressive Era. Historians have argued who the Progressives were, who they represented, and what reformations the Progressives sought out. A few credible historians to name, George Mowry, J. Joseph Huthmacher, and Gabriel Kolko, have given their opinions on The Progressive Era. Each opinion gives thoughtful insight and deserves to be further examined. J. Joseph Huthmacher was a history professor at the University of Delaware. Huthmacher studied the Progressive Era and published his ideas and opinions. Huthmacher felt that Progressives were predominantly urban middle-class reformers set out to right the wrongs of their society ( J. Joseph Huthmacher, 1962). At the same time Huthmacher believed that the urban lower-class and immigrants contributed to Progressivism in heavily populated areas such as New York and Massachusetts. In these heavily populated areas, Huthmacher seems to believe that the urban lower-class and immigrants contribute more. Given these circumstances, Huthmacher examines the contribution each group had given to Progressivism. Huthmacher expresses that the continual liberalism of Americans brought forward the type of political system the Progressives were reaching for.
