Page 1 of 7 Descriptive Astronomy Lab (ASTR 1101) Syllabus C ONTACT I NFORMATION Andrew VandenHeuvel 616-724-7188 (call or text before 7pm) [email protected] Virtual office hours by appointment C OURSE D ESCRIPTION This course is a Web Course and is conducted within Canvas at Course Catalog Description Descriptive Astronomy Lab is a laboratory course in which students complete a variety of hands- on and computer-based lab activities that explore the topics of cycles in the sky; astronomical history; the birth, life and death of stars; planetary formation and environments; galaxies and cosmology. This lab section complements Descriptive Astronomy (ASTR 1301), but the courses can be taken independently. Measurable Learning Outcomes Explain the naming of stars, the concepts of constellations and asterisms, and the daily, annual and precessional motion of the sky. Describe lunar phase and eclipses, and the relationships between these events. Describe the historical growth of astronomy from its astrological roots (Ptolemaic and Copernican models) and appreciate how the discoveries made by astronomers have changed mankind’s self- and world-views. Outline and explain the scientific method. List, describe or explain the various instruments astronomers use to gather data about planets, stars, galaxies and the universe. Use the theory of the atom and the properties of light to understand how astronomers analyze the data they gather with their instruments. Describe how observational and computational technologies play critical and crucial roles in our understanding of the universe. List & describe the characteristics (structure, composition, etc.) and behavior of the Sun. List and describe the theories concerning the formation of our solar system, and the subsequent characteristics of the planets and minor bodies within it. Outline the techniques used for the discovery of planets around other stars and the implications of these discoveries for life elsewhere in the universe. Describe the birth, life and death stages of stellar evolution, and how it results in the wide variety of stellar objects we find in our galaxy. Describe the theories concerning the formation of galaxies and morphological classes of galaxies. List and describe the properties of active galaxies and the theories explaining their properties.
