Aliyah Coleman Chapter 4  2. Is Ukrainian famine denial similar to the denials of other genocides? 1933 is when Ukraine went through the Great Famine. It is basically a man made or artificial hunger. This famine was not due to calamity or crop failure. There was actu- ally no crop failure, studies showed that it was only a little below the pre collectivization  average. Which means absolutely no crop failure could have caused this famine. The  government had actually forced the farmers to give up their farms and work the land on  common estates, and what those farmers made they had to give a big proportion to the  state.  Tottle is one of the self confessed famine- genocide deniers. He denies this be- cause one: the photographs form a weak link in the famine-genocide story. There are  not a lot of photographs from the 1932-1933 famine, so this proves his point. Even
