CHINUA ACHEBE 2 Early childhood a. Birthplace Chinua Achebe's childhood life and experience motivated his passion of reading and writing literature pieces together with African culture and traditions which pushed him into becoming well renowned African author and globally at large. Albeit Chinualumogu Achebe was born on November 16th, 1930 in South-Eastern Nigeria Ogidi town at Igbo village. b. family He was the fifth born out of the family of six children. His parents Isiah Okafor Achebe and Janet Achebe were introduced to Christianity by the missionaries after being convinced to join by the representatives from the British government (Arana, 2002., p. 499). His parents worked as legislatives in the British government during the colonial era. This made Chinua to be introduced to Igbo religious practices and Christian practices at a tender age, this there made the young Chinua to have exposure to both traditionalism and Christianity, however, due to the fact that his parents were shifting from their traditional ways made Chinua to have more exposure to the Christian teachings, the exposure to the British education system also contributed to the shunning away of Chinua to Christianity leaving behind his traditionalism (Clarke, 2007, p. 101). c. Adolescence He socially integrated with various people, at early age he believed in freedom of expression a fact that made his teacher to like him, and he made friends at various stages of life. His naming ceremony was accompanied by celebrations before his name was picked from the varieties given. Education a. Traditional education Early childhood of Chinua, he was among the lucky African children of their era to get cling to education.he received both traditional and formal education. He received the traditional education through stories that he was given by his parents and his siblings that made him learn more about his traditions as an Igbo. He began to learn the foreign language of English at the age of 8 years. He attended traditional ceremonies such as masquerade ceremonies, this ceremonies helped him built his stories in his novels and stories that furthered brighten his writing careers. b. Primary and high school education. In 1936 he joined Phillip Central School where his excellence in academics was highly appreciated by his teachers. Being a vivid reader that was accompanied by an outstanding performance he was lucky to join a government secondary school that was situated in Umuahia in Nigeria 1944, in high school he devoted most of his leisure time being in the library reading and familiarizing himself with work from different authors. In the college, he met Christopher Okigbo who became a renowned poet (Currey, 2003, p. 582).
