Utopia is a hard offer in the twenty-first century. Today we are individuals who know not, what we know are the abhorrences of "really existing" Utopias of the earlier century: Nazi Germany, Stalin's Soviet Union, Maoist China, thus on in discouraging repetition.1 For every situation there was a radical break with the present and a strong jump toward an envisioned future; for each situation the outcome was heartbreaking as far as human expense. Thankfully, what is by all accounts similarly reliable is that these Utopias were generally brief. History, consequently, seems to demonstrate two things: one, Utopias, once politically acknowledged, are stunning in their mercilessness; and two, they are bound to fall flat. Not precisely a ringing support. Yet we require Utopia like never before. We live in a period without choices, at "the end of history" as Frances Fukuyama would have it, when neoliberal private enterprise reins triumphant and uncontested.2 There are still distortions: radical Islam in the East, neo-rightist xenophobia in
