Unit 22 Piping and Tubing 1. What is the diference between pipe and tubing? Pipe is always named by its approximate inside diameter and schedule, or wall thickness. Tubing is usually measured by its outside diameter because the outside diameter of tubing is accurate. 2. What materials are used for piping and tubing in heating air-conditioning, and refrigeration systems? COPPER IRON STEEL ALUMINUM PVC CPVC 3. What materials are used for refrigerant piping? COPPER STEEL ALUMINUM 4. What materials are used for fuel gas piping? BLACK IRON - most common PLASTIC - covered corrugated stainless STEEL PIPING - (CSST) has limitations 5. What materials are used for water piping? GALVANIZED IRON COPPER PVC CPVC 6. What materials are used for drain lines? PVC – usually CPVC - IF high temperature drain water COPPER 7. What is the difference between hard and soft copper? Soft copper is annealed and comes in 50ft. rolls. - MALLEABLE Hard copper is in 20ft. straight sections. – RIGID
