“Araby” During the early twentieth century, the political scene in Ireland was very tumultuous as it sought independence from Great Britain. There was so much religious unrest as the conflict between Catholics and Protestants was at its peak. In 1914, Joyce published Dubliners , a collection of modern short stories that focused on the above aspects of life in Dublin, Ireland. “Araby” was the 11 th of these stories

“Araby” Many people in Ireland resented Joyce because he pained an honest, but ugly picture of Irish poverty and religious hypocrisy. Joyce rebelled against the Church in his life, and his writing.
