1 Human Biology 2013 Lecture 8 Metabolism Lecturer: Mike Thompson Metabolism Aims discuss metabolic rate and body temperature understand the hormonal regulation of metabolism discuss the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins describe the generation of wastes by the body Energy Metabolism is the total of all chemical reactions that occur in the body anabolism ATP (energy) requiring process (ATP breakdown to ADP + Pi) ie formation of new cells, maintenance and production of molecules catabolism ATP (energy)-releasing process (ATP production from ADP +Pi) digestion and then cellular metabolism ie use of glucose as an energy source this energy can be used to drive anabolic reactions
