What is an indentured servant While indentured servants came from all over GB. Men, women, children, signed a contract with a master to serve a term of 4 to 7 years. In exchange for their service, the indentured servant received their passage paid from England, as well as food, clothing, and shelter once they arrived in the colonies. Were indentured (like jasper) or had been indentured (like William kendall) Dearth of Labor One of the defining characteristics of American history through 1882: There are not enough laborers to do all the work that was required. Too few laborers means that labor is always “dear”. Laborers have to be imported either as free immigrants, indentured servants, or slaves. Why become an indentured servant?
