Mary J. Bojan Chem 110 Structure of the atom What IS the structure of an atom? What are the properties of atoms? REMEMBER: structure affects function! Important questions: Where are the electrons? What is the energy of an electron? 1 Today: Introduction to Energy Modern View of atom: An atom is almost entirely empty space. Atom Diameter = 0.1-0.5 nm ~ 10 -10 m Nuclear diameter = 10 -5 nm = 10 -14 m Atom diameter = 10,000 x nuclear diameter But where ARE the electrons???? Mary J. Bojan Chem 110 2 1 nm = 10 -9 m 10 Å = 1nm ( Å = angstrom) Before we can answer this, we will need to know something about energy

There are two forms of energy: kinetic and potential energy Mary J. Bojan Chem 110 3 Kinetic Energy energy of motion Mechanical moving mass (1/2m v 2 ) Electrical moving charge Light photons Sound molecules moving uniformly Heat molecules moving randomly Potential Energy stored energy Mechanical mass in a place where a force can act Electrostatic due to the interaction of charged particles Chemical bonds binding energy Units of energy: Energy can be converted from one form to another but total energy remains constant.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
