Reading Assignment Chapter 11: Databases, pp. 622-659 Unit Lesson Unit VII examines database design, database management tools, and database security. We hear too often about database vulnerabilities about hackers gaining access to our personal information and credit card information. Is there anything we, as consumers, can do about this besides hiding cash under the mattress so that we do not need to use electronic credit cards, or are we just victims of technology? There are many different types of data management tools available. One can even use Excel to create a database. There are many considerations that should be thought about when choosing a database management tool. These considerations are cost, versatility, and ease of use. See the chart below that explains the four considerations. Tool Cost Versatility Ease of Use Dedicated software Simple applications benefit from inexpensive shareware, and the dedicated software may be costly. This is frequently dedicated to a single kind of database. The fields are predetermined, so this is easy to use, and minimal setup is required. Word processing software such as Microsoft Word Most consumers have word processing software of some sort. Flat files are the best choice for this. An easy interface is used that most users are familiar with. Spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Excel Most consumers have this type of software. This is best utilized for easy flat files that involve calculations. An easy interface is used that most users are familiar with. Custom software The development and programming time are expensive. Programs can be tailored to any type of data, making this type of software very versatile. The programming may be difficult, but the payoff is that it is easy to use. Database software such as Microsoft Access High end database software may be expensive, while shareware software is inexpensive. High-end software provides excellent versatility.
