Locke’s influence on Americans John Locke developed a political theory that redefined the relationship between the gov and citizens It is known as the compact theory of gov These ideas greatly influenced the founders, particularly Thomas Jefferson Locke’s philosophy, con’t Thus men and their rulers have a compact – men will abide by the rules of gov ( submit to be governed) as long as the gov protect the unalienable rights of man – life, liberty and property of the citizens Whenever any form of gov becomes destructive of these ends it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it and to institute new gov Radicalism of these ideas You must remember that most gov in Europe at this time were monarchies, not representative gov. In England, the king still influenced gov, but parliament took a greater role in directing policy than in any other country at the time This resulted from the glorious rev (1689(. British had more representative gov than any other country in europe Colonist argued that this representation did not include them
