The Effect of Vibration on Earthworms Ashley Oliver 11/17/16 Introduction Animals use a variety of tactics to escape danger. The earthworm senses vibration in the soil to attempt an escape from a predator. Earthworms live in the dark soil, so this is a very important feature that they must utilize to survive. Mitra (2009) suggests that earthworms have adapted this strategy through evolution to enhance their success. Over the years, humans have taken the idea from earthworm predators that vibration in the soil makes it easier to gather the worms. Worm grunting is a common practice used by humans to gather earthworms as bait (Mitra et al., 2009). However, worm grunting is not just used to gather bait for fish, but also a profitable industry. (Catania, 2008). This experiment was chosen due to our interest in how earthworms would react not only from a vibration, but also by how much vibration there was. Our hypothesis was that the more vibration the worms detected, the more worms would move away from the source.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
