Powerpoint Outline Slide 3: Chemical categories - Plants have two categories of chemicals they produce. 1. Primary metabolites: involved in plant growth- sugars, proteins etc. 2. Secondary metabolites: plant defense Direct: plant will secrete chemical to deter insect. Indirect: plant secretes chemical to attract predator of insect. Slide 4: Organic Compounds - Plants are able to detect toxins in harmful insect’s saliva Monoterpenoids Sesquiterpenoids - Even though producing these chemicals can help the plant survive, it does take a large amount of energy to produce it. - Because of this, the plant will usually wait until the insect has begun to feed before producing and releasing the chemical compound. Slide 5: Alkaloids - Alkaloids Found in many vascular plants Bitter tasting or foul smelling Can be toxic to insects and fungi Slide 6: Cyanogenic Glycosides - In plants that contain cyanogenic glycosides, hydrogen cyanide is produced.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
