Thapa Magar 1 Sabin Thapa Magar Prof. Vicki Gnuse Govt. 2306-21003 August 27, 2017 Texas’ Voter ID law Texas’ voter ID law is a controversial topic that is left to sort out. While the law makers are presenting the conflict in existing laws and unable to suggest any solutions, the recent hearing on Texas’ voter ID law has pushed its decision against the SB 14 and SB 5. SB 14, which was passed in 2011, required the official government id (includes gun permit but not student id), which was termed as a discriminatory intent by Texas. U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos had ruled that SB 14 violated the Voting Rights Act (VRA) and U.S. constitution in 2014. However, the Senate came with the SB 5 in 2016 after judge Ramos ruled out the bill SB 14 as intent to discriminate. Department of Justice (DOJ) allied with Texas’ lawmakers to pass SB 5. The bill was sent to Ramos and she invalidated the bill claiming it as “voter intimidation”. While
