American Consensus o Americans did agree on a number of signifigant matters that kept them united as a nation. o This view of American history is called the American consensus. o What has drawn people to this country, and kept the nation united despite deep divisions. o 1) Americans believe that they have the best form of Gov Although political parties differ, there is general agreement in maintaing the constitution and retaining the three branches of gov. Dissend usually follow attempts to circumvent the proper role of gov Americans believe in the limited gov except when “necessary” or when exerting the popular will. We have the best form of gov o We cherish our freedom of expression, freedom of movement o World’s oldest working constitution – amended, but never overthrown. o When confederate states established their own gov, they followed (word for word) the US constitution, with some revisions o 2) we believe that the gov should exercise its authority to do what is best
