Class, The video we watched was very interesting. It actually looks like a fun job to have. How fun would it be to have a job where you intentionally destroy packages to see their strength? UPS has a lab that is certified by the International Safe Transit Association. In this lab they take time to test the Burst strength, edge crush resistance, compression, product shock fragility, and product vibration (Package Engineering, 2017). One of the statistics from the video I found interesting was how they “condition” the package before testing it (UPS Package Design & Test Lab, 2010). They adjust the temperature and humidity of the package to match conditions it may see during transit. The stat that stood out is that a box in 80% humidity will lose 50% of its structural integrity (UPS Package Design & Test Lab, 2010). Working in a warehouse for 17 years, I have seen many packages that just cannot handle the stress of transportation. They get stacked on pallets, and may even have more pallets stacked on top of
