Rocky 2 Rocky: Cinematic Techniques Cinematic techniques and design elements help establish themes in the film. In Irwin Winkler’s sports film Rocky (1976) the protagonist is played by Sylvester Stallone. The major theme shows the struggle of a boxer; a fighter who must overcome his doubts in his abilities in the ring and face his fear. A woman (Adrian) Rocky meets and his trainer (Mickey) inspired him and gave him the courage to enter the ring and face his fears. The film employs key elements to make the movie powerful which provide an emotional response from the audience. As a result of using these elements, the film offers realism. In a movie, the theme is important as it gives meaning and explains what the movie entails. According to Goodykoontz & Jacobs (2014), “A theme is an idea, subject, or topic of some kind that pervades the plot. It is not so much what happens, but rather what the movie is about, part of the meaning you are expected to take away from the work” (Section 3.3, para 2). The movie Rocky shows how to believe in one’s self and how to conquer fear through courage. Using the formalist approach this paper will show how the basic elements: Cinematography, lighting, and the acting style are important factors in conveying the true meaning in this film. In a film, the cinematographer is responsible for cinematography; it should evoke reactions from viewers through carefully crafted camerawork. In other words, the camera view, camera angles, and how scenes are shot enhance emotions which strengthen the plot. According to Goodykoontz & Jacobs (2014), “Cinematography means writing with movement” (Section 6.2, para 1). Throughout Rocky , Winkler communicates how the protagonist feels emotionally and what his dream is through the lighting, several camera views, and angles.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
