October 19, 2016 Professor Kaiming Ye BME 201 HW #7 1. When isolating cells from animal tissue, scientists treat the tissues with materials such as trypsin, collagenase, or EDTA. These chemicals breakdown the extracellular matrix and other bonds that normally hold cells together, allowing them to be isolated for study. Trypsin and collagenase are both enzymes. Trypsin cleaves the bonds that cells make with the surface of the dish they are cultured in, while collagenases break up the bonds in fibrous tissues. EDTA is an acid that binds to cells and prevents them from bonding to each other. These chemicals only break down the cells, not kill them. 2. A necessity in experiments is to have a homogenous group to test independent variables on. Whatever you are studying should be as large as possible, without affecting accuracy, and all members should be as similar as possible. If members of the cell population are varied, then different groups could respond more actively to different testing variables and give false results. Therefore, it is important to start out with a completely

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
