September 13, 2016 Professor Kaiming Ye HW #2 1. False. A cell surface receptor is a polar molecule found on the exterior of the cell. It binds to an extracellular ligand, which is hydrophilic, thereby processing extracellular signals and translating them into a subsequent intracellular signal. Comparatively, an intracellular molecule is nonpolar and found not on the cell membrane but in the cytoplasm. These are activated by ligands that are able to enter the cell because they are hydrophobic. This information shows a clear distinction between the different receptors and the signal molecules they use. 2. True. All extracellular signals are completely dependent on signal molecules and receptors. Without these cell components, many cellular processes would be impossible to complete. 3. a. Pool 3 contains cDNA. b. Some colonies may not have bound radioactive ligands as a result of an error or mutation during reproduction of the plasmids. c. One possible option would be to use an enzyme such as PCR to locate and isolate the desired gene, multiplying is separately until you have a pure plasmid.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
