October 31 st , 2016 Professor Kaiming Ye BME 201 1. Cell therapy as a concept is summed up well by Phillips A. Paracelsus, who said in his book that “the heart heals the heart, lung heals lung,” etc. Cell therapy is a group of techniques that restore tissue function by replacing damaged cells with healthy ones. Instead of replacing an entire organ, some healthy tissue is introduced o and incorporated into the damaged tissue. Cells from the appropriate tissue re-isolated and grown in culture. In isolation, scientists are able to identify ideal cells for transplant, mainly younger ones that regenerate more quickly. An example of cell therapy being used can be found in the treatment of severe combined immunodeficiency diseases (SCID), where the patient is unable to find suitable donor for bone marrow. In this case, the individuals hematopoietic stem cells are treated with a viral vector with the normal genes. This method has helped many people that suffer from SCID.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
