EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE In healthcare today there is a persistent effort to stay ahead of other organizations. It has been proposed that one feature that many successful have is the ability to use their emotional intelligence. In order for different organizations to become successful they must have effective leadership that can communicate, team build and make good decisions. The significance of emotional intelligence, communication, and team building in the present day healthcare and the role it plays in leadership is vital. There are several theories that has explain what emotional intelligence is. According to Mayer and Salovey emotional intelligence is defined as a person’s ability to read the emotions of others and act accordingly (Sadri, 2012). Mayer and Salovey also included that there are four components the El. They are perceiving emotions, integrating emotions into thought processes, understanding emotions, and regulating and managing emotions and intellectual growth [South University, 2017]. The science journalist Daniel Goleman described the five components of emotional intelligence as it relates leadership. They include self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills. He emphasize the trademark of self-awareness was one’s ability to monitor one’s own emotions state and to correctly identify and name one’s emotions. To be a self-regulator, you must be able to control impulses and moods, the trademark includes trustworthiness and integrity, and openness to change. Goleman describes motivation as the tendency to pursue goals with energy and persistence; strong drive to achieve and accomplish any goal. A leader with emotional intelligence will have the ability to show empathy for co- workers by relating how the react to emotional situations.
