Laboratory Report Sheet: Extraction of DNA Exercise 1: Extraction of DNA Questions: A. Describe what the DNA from the split peas looked like? (1 point) The DNA that I saw from the split peas looked like a filmy white substance that formed between the layers of the alcohol and the pea juice. It had a resemblance to a spider web that was floating in the liquid. B. Were your experimental results what you expected to see? Specifically, was there more or less DNA than you expected?( 1 point) My experimental results were about what I expected them to be, though the one thing that I was incorrect about was the size of the DNA. I thought the strands were going to be smaller then what they appeared, but they turned out to be a decent size about percent of the size of the liquid if not more. C. What was the purpose of adding the detergent to the experiment? If the detergent was not used, do you think the experiment results would have changed? Explain your answer. (3 points) Detergent is there to break down and open the cell membrane and the cell nucleus. The dish detergent allowed the DNA to float out of the original blended pea and water mixture and into the alcohol, which allowed us to see the strands in a clear liquid as well. It allowed the cell to breakdown, basically.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
