Shaina Poore Weather and Climate Lab 23 August 2017 Solar Eclipse With all of the hype built up around the solar eclipse, there was only one thing to do: go to Sanford Stadium to witness it. As my friends and I stood in line and anticipated a black out, I started thinking about what was really going on up in space. It is so interesting to me that the Sun’s diameter is about 400 times bigger than the Moon, but because it is about 400 times farther away from us, they appear to be the same size. If the Moon was even the slightest bit smaller or farther away from Earth, eclipses wouldn’t be possible. Likewise, if the Moon was slightly larger or closer to Earth, eclipses wouldn’t be as incredible because it would block too much of the solar corona. The distance and size of the Sun and Moon are legitimately perfect for us to be able to experience these phenomenon’s. From the stadium, we didn’t experience a vast temperature change because we were not in the line of totality. However, some areas in the line of totality
