Paul suffers when he leaves the front on his furlough. He realizes that he has changed and cannot talk about his experiences without losing control of his carefully guarded emotions. He suffers a second time when he realizes that the Russians are really no different from him. He is upset because he knows that this thought will not go well in the war. He must put aside those feelings and he swears to fight for a union between Germans and Russians. Lastly Paul suffers when Kat dies at the end of the novel. Paul has lost all of his other friends, but Kat has been there with him through it all until now. When Paul goes home on leave, he wants to relax but everybody wants to know how the front is getting along. Paul cannot talk to them about his experiences. Paul says, "I breathe deeply and say over to myself-'You are at home, you are at home.' But a sense of strangeness will not leave me, I cannot feel at home amongst these things...There is a distance, a veil between us." He is afraid that if he talks about the front then he will tell them what it's really
