The primary goal of the clinician– patient interview is to improve the well-being of the patient. The purpose of conversation with a patient is to establish a trusting and supportive relationship, to gather information, and to offer information. Using effective communication techniques and appropriate assessment or screening tools, you will promote trust and convey respect, and you will allow the patient’s story to unfold in its most full and detailed form. For this week’s discussion post, the 76-year-old African-American male with disabilities in an urban setting will be selected in the example for this discussion. Interview and Communication Techniques Effective communication skills are needed to build a trusting relationship with the patient. The patient should feel comfortable that they chose the right health provider. Effective communication is built on courtesy, confirmation, connection, and comfort (Ball et al., 2015).
