10/23 Mark Assume priority of Mark. •Most scholars estimate Mark ʼ s writing by 70 AD. •Name “Mark” attached to book during the second century. •Most contend “Mark” is the John Mark of Acts. •Not an eyewitness of Jesus •Not the somewhat vague descriptions of Palestinian geography Mark ʼ s Focus: Proclamation if Jesus Christ as Son of God •Mark 1:11 - Jesus ʼ baptism •Mark 9:7 - transfiguration •Mark 15:39 - crucifixion •Secrecy Motif - multiple miracle events where Jesus says, “Shhh, don ʼ t tell anyone.” OT Theme - wicked plot against innocent, analogous to Jewish leaders killing Jesus; see Wisdom 2:7. •Compare Jesus ʼ suffering to Psalms 22 and Isaiah 52 & 53 .... Jesus would have known the whole Psalms quote. REMEMBER the historical grounding of why the text was written... Christians suffering under Nero.
