Owen 1 Casey Owen Spring 2008 Art001 April 17, 2008 Illusions of Reality The Mattress Factory is a peculiar, yet fascinating place where one can find many different types of installation art. This genre of art could be described as a contemporary take on an art gallery. Instead of simply walking into a room with paintings hung on the wall and perhaps some sculptures here or there, installations are pieces of art that actually are the room. Every single thing in that space is an element of the artwork. Knowing this information before I visited the Mattress Factory, I was filled with anticipation and excitement to experience installation art for the first time. After viewing the first installation and getting the feel for things, I then stepped into my favorite exhibition of them all, Danäe, by James Turrell. Constructed in 1983 out of drywall, paint, ultraviolet and incandescent light, Danäe was one of the very first permanent installations that the Mattress Factory collected (James). Once I had experienced it, I could understand why they wanted to keep it in their building. It began with an entryway that was almost entirely dark. This created in me a sense of excitement and adventure. I wondered what in the world I was going to find on the other end of the hall. Was something going to jump out at me? Was I going to run into something? As these questions flooded my mind, I was reminded of a haunted house. I thought that maybe the artist was trying to scare his viewers. Just when I thought that surely something horrifying was going to be in the installation, I was pleasantly surprised when I finally reached the doorway. There were no monsters or scary decorations in the room; in fact, there was almost nothing in
