Business ethics is a very important piece of the puzzle for a successful business owner. Business ethics focuses on what constitutes right or wrong behavior in the business world and on how moral and ethical principles are applied by the situations that arise in their daily activities in the workplace. (pg 97) Although this definition is broad, I do not feel that business ethics can be summarized in one definition. This area addresses numerous issues, problems, and dilemmas within the management of businesses. It does this through numerous perspectives and methods. After defining what ethics are, I would like to explore a certain case of the drug Vioxx, and its creator Merck and Company Inc. This example will show the decline and fall of business ethics over time and how whistle blowing could have played its part. Ethics as a whole is the aspect of what is right and what is wrong. In the business world, ethics is all about how a company responds to certain situations. A company should have an ethical structure. From the tops of the corporate structure all the way downs the ladder. This includes ethical codes of conduct, and corporate compliance programs. Business ethics is very important to a business because it could affect the long run of the company. It can also affect the individual officers, the directors of the company, along with each individual employee. Every ethical decision can affect everyone in the company, along with customers and suppliers. An example of business ethics is the business relations of Merck and Company and their drug Vioxx. The painkiller Vioxx was introduced in 1999 by Merck & Co. It has been used by over 20 million Americans since it was put on
