What is Algae? Algae are considered as simple plant-like organisms because: Algae range from unicellular to multicellular forms, have photosynthetic ability, and lack of leaves and vascular tissue.

Algae contain of eukaryotic cells which have varying proportions of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, a nucleus enclosed within a membrane, and chloroplasts bound in one or more membranes. Chloroplasts have circular DNA.

Type of algae Biologists classified microalgae in a variety of classes. The main distinguishing characteristics between these classes are their basic cellular structure, pigmentation, and life cycle.

Type of algae Among these classes, the most important classes are these four classes: diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) are algae found in oceans, fresh and brackish water. Diatom cells are encased within a unique cell wall made of silica (hydrated silicon dioxide) called a frustule. Diatom cells store carbon in natural oils or as a polymer of carbohydrates, known as chyrsolaminarin.

Type of algae The green algae (Chlorophyceae) are algae found in fresh water. Green algae cells store carbon in starch form. Also oils can be produced under certain conditions. The blue-green algae (Cyanophyceae) have a structure much closer to bacterias. They play an important role in fixing nitrogen from the atmosphere.

Type of algae The golden algae (Chrysophyceae) group of algae are found in fresh water. Golden algae are similar to the diatoms in pigmentation and biochemical composition. They store carbon as natural oils and carbohydrates.
