PSY 438 EXAM 1 STUDY GUIDE Theories and Methods for Studying Personality o What is a theory? A theory is an organized system of assumptions & principles o o What are the criteria that a theory can be evaluated with? Make testable predic- tions (principle of falsifiability), scope or explanatory power (breadth), elegance or parsimony (simplicity), can absorb new information (supple, flexible), scientif- ic theorizing is tentative, generate new research (open ended process) o Kurt Lewin- “There is nothing so practical as a good theory.” We all use theories everyday. We act like naive scientists; trying to understand the social world & the causes of people’s behavior. Also said “nothing is so dangerous as a theory unre- cognized as such.” o Case studies- Study one or a few individuals in depth. Usually without standard- ized measures. Presented in narrative qualitative data rather than quantitative data.
