1 1 Sex Education FCE 212 March 15, 2007 2 Children Learn Sex Through: • Parents • School • Peers • Media (visual and audio) 3 Sex Education Inspired by: • Sexologists like Wilhelm Reich. • Psychologists like Sigmund Freud and James W. Prescott. • They propose that sex education allows control over the body and liberation from social control. 4 The View of Proponents: • To break down pre-existing notions of modesty and encourage acceptance of practices, such as homosexuality and premarital sex. • BUT - Some parents do not want sex education being included in school courses for several reasons: Moral reasons, values being different from family system, and the undermining of parental authority. • Some parents also think it will increase sexual curiosity and lead to earlier sexual activity. 5 In Fact: • A substantial majority of parents do not discuss sex with their teenage children (Wattleton, 1987). 6
