Lauren Claret September 27, 2007 English 2231-2/Banerjee Film Review: Half Nelson Half Nelson , a film by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, follows the story of an unconventional companionship that forms between a substance abusing junior high teacher and one of his students. Rated R for drug content, language and some sexuality, the film premiered at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival. Another notable premiere from the 2006 Sundance Film Festival was the widely acclaimed, Little Miss Sunshine. Classified as an independent film, Half Nelson went into production on less than a million dollar budget. ThinkFilm eventually backed limited theatrical release for August 11, 2006 in the United States. Substantiating the slot for indie film, Half Nelson earned considerable recognition from audiences and critics alike resulting in a first time Oscar nomination for lead actor, Ryan Gosling. Always a collaborative effort, the young filmmakers, Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, gained credentials from a short string of documentaries ( Have You Seen This Man?
