While I do agree with Havrilesky that some “antiheroic” protagonists, such as Breaking Bad’s Walter White and Mad Men’s Don Draper exist to disappoint audiences, I believe that this is not always the case. Sometimes, antiheroes disappoint us and continue to be evil, cruel and simply not understandable. However, antiheroes can sometimes turn out to do the opposite and surprise us or impress us as the story unfolds. An example of this is Severus Snape in the Harry Potter series. Until almost the last episode, Severus Snape is portrayed as a harsh, malicious professor who seems to be an antagonist that goes against the path of the main protagonist, Harry Potter. However, we are later surprised to find out that Snape turns out to be an extremely brave and loyal hero. Therefore, an anti-hero can be defined not as a character that performs unheroic acts, but rather a character that does not follow conventional heroic traits. Hence, certain
