2. Analyse the use of cinematography in a five minute segment of your choice from one of the following films: Cinema Paradiso, The Royal Tenenbaums or Trainspotting. How is cinematography used to create meaning? According to Webster’s dictionary, cinematography refers to “the art or science of motion-picture photography”. The definition is very much abstract, which might create confusion amongst moviegoers. In simple words, cinematography is the movement, angle and framing of the camera in order to capture a performers emotions, the background, the props, and the music, essentially everything in a scene. The movie chosen is the comedy drama The Royal Tenenbaums ( The Royal Tenebaums, 2001). The scene opens on a long shot of Margot Tenenbaum (Gwyneth Paltrow) walking and smoking on the bridge, the camera stays still while she walks towards it. Without changing the position of the camera or using another camera from another angle, the camera swiftly and smoothly shifts to Eli Cash (Owen Wilson) simultaneously walking towards Margot. Finally, the two characters meet at the intersection of the bridge and the camera stops at a medium shot of them facing each other.
