TIME LINE FOR THE ABOLITION OF SLAVERY IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE 1772—Great Britain abolishes slavery in British Isles, but not in the colonies. 1777—Vermont abolishes slavery. 1780—Pennsylvania abolishes slavery. 1784—all of the New England states pass gradual emancipation laws. 1799—New York passes a gradual emancipation law. 1821—Venezuela passes the Cucuta emancipation law. 1825—Chile abolishes slavery. 1829—Mexico, concerned over Anglo Americans bringing slaves into Texas, abolishes slavery. 1833—Parliament abolishes slavery (after an apprenticeship period) throughout the Empire. 1846—Denmark abolishes slavery in the Danish West Indies (now the U.S. Virgin Islands) 1848—after several false starts, France abolishes slavery in its Western Hemisphere colonies. 1854—Venezuela and Peru abolish slavery 1863—the Netherlands abolishes slavery in its Western Hemisphere colonies.
